S - Scripture Proverbs 15:17 NLT
“A bowl of vegetables with someone you love is better than steak with someone you hate.”
O - Observation
Last year I bought a smoker to cook Christmas lunch in - it was delicious! The meat was tender and juicy and the flavour was divine. Yes, it took me 14 hours to cook, but it was worth it!
It’s easy to allocate 14 hours of my time to cook for the ones I love, but would I do it for my enemies? Why then do I (we) spend so much time ‘polishing’ ourselves for the outside world, always doing our utmost to make sure that we are dressed well and looking our best “just in case” we see someone while we’re out. I know I’m happier just being me, surrounded by the ones I love (and wearing trackies).
A - Application
Eat steak with the ones you love! Surround yourself with people that build you up and invest in you, your life and your wellbeing.
All to often I try to be a people pleaser, putting others (friends and foes) above my own needs. Go the extra mile (or 14 hour cook) for those that mean the most to you. Just remember, Sam, that you’ll never please everyone, no matter how much you put in.
P - Prayer
Lord, help me to put you at the top of my list as a God pleaser. Keep my friends and family close, but also give me the wisdom to spot foes before they sit at my table. And let my steaks be juicy and tender. Amen.
